Agnes Water State School

Project Detail: Food Forest
Location: Agnes Water, QLD 4677

Project Summary

Students have been working in the establishment of their ‘food forest’ and ‘bush tucker garden’ with the aim to harvest their own food for cooking and health education.

Every week the Enviro Group and the Garden Club have been weeding, mulching, watering, planting, harvesting and collecting vegetables. And every Friday, students have been cooking with the fresh produce, including: salads, stir-fries, curries, and potato bakes. They have been surprised at how good things can taste!

Among other activities, students have built three corrugated raised beds and three flat beds for planting vegetables. They have planted potatoes in recycled garbage bins and a number of fruit trees and native trees in their ‘food forest’.

While students and teacher are busy working in their food forest and gardens, the school is currently investigating automatic irrigation for the garden to ensure that it survives over the school holiday.
