Answer: Hi Steve,
Adding compost at least twice per year will help break down the clay particles in the soil. If you do not make your own compost you can purchase bagged product. Is the position very sunny? To test the soil for pH ensure a sample is taken approximately 140 mm below the soil.
Sugar cane mulch will help suppress weeds and retain moisture in summer. I have attached a link to the Yates website for vegetable growing.
