Early Spring Vegie Patch

Colour and crunch

Late winter is the perfect time for temperate zone gardeners to start sowing some capsicum seeds. Tropical and subtropical gardeners are lucky enough to be able to sow capsicum seed all year round, cool climate gardeners will have to hold out a little while longer until the weather warms up.

Yates Capsicum ‘Colour Salad Selection’ is a colourful collection of capsicums in various shapes and sizes including green, orange, red and purple. Capsicums are high in vitamins, sweet, flavoursome and can be eaten raw in salads, marinated, stuffed, roasted and used in dips, stir fries and frittatas.

How to grow:

  1. Sow direct in warm conditions or raise in trays or punnets of Yates Seed Raising Mix . A sunny windowsill is a great spot to nurture them as they germinate.
  2. Once the seedlings are established, regularly applying a potassium fortified plant food like Yates Thrive® Flower & Fruit Soluble Plant Food will promote healthy leaf growth as well as lots of flowers that will turn into delicious capsicums. The nutrients in Thrive will feed capsicums through both the leaves and the roots.

Magnificent mignonettes

Lettuce is so handy to have in your kitchen garden, whether you’re whipping up a quick salad or adding some crispy leaves to a sandwich or wrap. Mignonette lettuces are hardy and quick growing and their small heads have leaves that are tender and sweet tasting.

Yates Lettuce ‘Green Mignonette’ and Yates Lettuce ‘Brown Mignonette’ are 2 heat tolerant varieties that are perfect for growing in a sunny spot in either pots or garden beds and will be ready to harvest in just 8 – 10 weeks.

How to grow:

  1. Throughout the year, seed can be sown direct where the lettuces are to grow or raised in trays of Yates Seed Raising Mix
  2. Transplant when the seedlings are around 3 – 4 cm high. Make successive sowings every few weeks to ensure you have an ongoing supply of these delicious lettuces.
  3. Fertilise each week with Yates Thrive® Vegie & Herb Liquid Plant Food, which is a complete and balanced plant food containing nitrogen for vibrant green leaf growth, phosphorus for strong root development and potassium for healthy plants.
  4. Snails and slugs can quickly decimate both lettuce seedlings and mature plants. Protect your lettuces with a light sprinkling of Yates Blitzem® Snail & Slug Pellets around the base of the plants.

Mignonette lettuces are quite ornamental and growing both the green and brown varieties together in a pot or trough creates a very attractive (and edible) display.
