How to Grow Grevillea

A great range of native plants shrubs that will grow in tropical, temperate and cold climates. There are several hundred species and varieties of grevilleas, so there is one to suit every garden. The spider-like flowers come in a range of beautiful colours, including reds, oranges, yellows, cream and pink . Grevilleas can range from ground covers, small to medium sized shrubs and large trees, so are very versatile. They are also great for attacting bees and birdlife to your garden.

How to grow grevillea in a garden

Step 1

Choose a place in the garden that gets full sun to half shade. Prepare the planting area well by digging in Yates Dynamic Lifter Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser.

Step 2

Dig the planting hole twice as wide and to the same depth as the root-ball.

Step 3

Carefully remove the plant from the pot disturbing the roots as little as possible.

Step 4

Position in hole and backfill with soil, gently firming down. Form a raised or doughnut shaped ring of soil around the outer edge of the plant's root zone. This helps keep water where it's needed. Always water in well after planting to settle the soil around the roots and keep the soil moist for several weeks while the new plant establishes.

Step 5

Mulch with woodchip and water in well.

Step 6

Feed in autumn and spring with Yates Dynamic Lifter Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser to promote strong root development, healthy leaf growth and lots of flowers.

How to grow grevillea in a pot

Step 1

Choose a compact grevillea that is suitable for growing in a container. Place the pot in a position that receives full sun to part shade.

Step 2

Fill the pot with a quality potting mix, such as Yates Potting Mix with Dynamic Lifter.

Step 3

Carefully remove the plant from the pot disturbing the roots as little as possible.

Step 4

Position in hole and backfill with potting mix, gently firming down. Water in well.

Step 5

Mulch with woodchip and water in well.

Step 6

Feed in autumn and spring with Yates Dynamic Lifter Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser to promote strong root development, healthy leaf growth and lots of flowers.

Growing tips

Give the bush a light prune back after flowering.
There are many different varieties available, from the prostate ground covers, to grafted standards. Check your local nursery for the best ones to grow in your area.
When choosing a pot for your plant always ensure that it will suit the ultimate size of the tree or shrub.
These plants dislike having wet feet. Ensure that the soil is well drained and that they are not sitting in a moist soil for long periods.
Some people are allergic to prickly grevillea leaves, so be aware of this as a potential problem in the garden.
Can be easily propagated from cuttings.

Common Problems of Grevillea

Root Rot

If you notice your plant dies soon after planting, or after overwatering or heavy rain, then the likely cause for a Grevillea dying is Root Rot and/or poor soil drainage.

Most Grevilleas grow best in very well-drained soil. Avoid planting in clayey soil unless it is a variety that tolerates wetter soils.
