How to Grow Alliums

Alliums or ornamental Alliums (Allium spp.) are an attractive spring flowering bulb that is often grown in the cooler climates, but can also be grown in the warmer climates. They produce large clusters of violet to deep purple flowers that stand tall above the foliage.

How to alliums grow in a garden

Step 1

Choose a well drained spot in the garden that attracts full sun.

Step 2

Enrich the soil with some compost and Yates Dynamic Lifter Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser before planting.

Step 3

Place bulbs directly where the plant is to grow. Dig a hole twice the size of the bulb and at 15cm spacing. Place the bulb in the hole.

Step 4

Cover with soil.

Step 5

Do not water until plants first appear. Once they appear, water well keeping the soil slightly moist.

Step 6

When flower buds appear feed every 1 to 2 weeks with Yates Thrive Roses and Flowers Liquid Plant Food.

How to grow alliums in a pot

Step 1

Choose a pot that has adequate drainage holes and place it in a position that gets full sun

Step 2

Fill the pot with Yates Potting Mix with Dynamic Lifter.

Step 3

Place bulbs directly into the pot at a depth that is twice the size of the bulb at at 15cm intervals.

Step 4

Cover with soil.

Step 5

Do not water until plants first appear. Once they appear, water well keeping the soil slightly moist.

Step 6

When flower buds appear feed every 1 to 2 weeks with Yates Thrive Roses and Flowers Liquid Plant Food.

Growing tips

  • It is not necessary to remove the bulbs after all the growth has died down.
  • Keep the soil lightly moist at all times until after flowering has been completed. 
  • Avoid watering the bulb during the dormant period.
