How to Grow Crassula

Succulents are truly amazing plants. Some require a bit of love and attention, where as others just like to be left on their own. Commonly known as a Jade Plant, Lucky Plant or Money Tree (Crassula ovata) this group of plants are laid back to the max. Its not just the ease of care that makes this group appealing, it is also the variety that is available. From the 'Red Edge' with its flat leaves to the ever popular 'Gollum' and its elongated leaves with the oval tips, these plants are sure to impress.

How to grow crassulas in your garden

Step 1

Choose a sunny spot, sheltered from afternoon sun, with well drained soil. Enrich the soil with Yates Dynamic Lifter Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser. If the soil is clay based, add gypsum and fork in well.

Step 2

Dig the planting hole twice as wide and to the same depth as the root-ball. Remove the plant from the container, gently tease the roots.

Step 3

Position in hole and backfill with soil, gently firming down. Always water in well after planting to settle the soil around the roots and keep the soil lightly moist for several weeks while the new plant establishes.

Step 4

Mulch with an organic mulch, or stones and pebbles ensuring to keep it away from the base of the plant.

Step 5

Water regularly allowing the soil to dry out between watering.

Feed your succulent every month from Spring to Autumn with Yates Dynamic Lifter Liquid.

How to grow crassulas in a pot

Step 1

Choose a pot just deeper than the existing root-ball and position indoors in a area full sun but is sheltered from the harsh afternoon sun.

Step 2

Partially fill the pot with quality potting mix, such as Yates Potting Mix with Dynamic Lifter.

Step 3

Remove the plant from the container, gently tease the roots.

Step 4

Position in hole and backfill with potting mix, gently firming down. Water in lightly.

Step 5

Feed lightly with Yates Dynamic Lifter Liquid in Spring.

Growing tips

Keep the leaves clean by wiping with a damp cloth.
Crassula ovatas make an interesting bonsai style specimen., Their thick trunks and fleshy leaves give them an aged appearance.
Perfect for terrariums, in mixed plantings or as a specimen plant.
C. ovatas can be easily propagated through cuttings and through leaf propagation. When propagating ensure that you allow the ends of the leaves or stems to dry out slightly prior to placing in a good quality seed raising mix.
