How to Grow Fritillaria

Fritillarias are great bulbs for those colder climates to really add a boost of colour and texture to the spring garden. When in flower they produce delicate drooping bell shaped flowers in yellows, oranges and bronze. Great for planting en-masse in garden beds, pots, under trees or in rockeries.

How to grow fritillarias in a garden

Step 1

Choose a spot in the garden that receives full sun to part shade and has well drained soil.

Step 2

Enrich the soil with some compost and Yates Dynamic Lifter Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser well before planting.

Step 3

Place the bulb directly where the plant is to grow at a depth of 10cm and 30cm apart.

Step 4

Cover with soil.

Step 5

Keep the soil slightly moist ensuring not to overwater.

Step 6

Towards the end of winter, when the shoots begin to emerge feed every 1 to 2 weeks with Yates Thrive Roses and Flowers Liquid Plant Food.

How to grow fritillarias in a pot

Step 1

Choose a well drained spot in the garden that receives full sun to part shade.

Step 2

Fill the pot with Yates Potting Mix with Dynamic Lifter.

Step 3

Place the bulb directly into the pot at a depth of 10cm.

Step 4

Cover with soil.

Step 5

Keep the soil lightly moist ensuring not to overwater.

Step 6

Towards the end of winter, when the shoots begin to emerge feed every 1 to 2 weeks with Yates Thrive Roses and Flowers Liquid Plant Food.

Growing tips

Avoid overwatering as Fritillaria don't like having wet feet and respond better to well drained slightly moist soils to lightly dry soils.
Due to their low growth habit, they are perfect to place under trees or in rockeries.
