How to Grow Hippeastrum

Hippeastrums or 'Hippies' are a relative of the most popular Amaryllis or Bella Donna Lillies. Hippies available as a bulb differ, however, as they are a little more sensitive to the cooler conditions. They produce large, dominating flowers in Summer on long stems that brighten up any garden or add some texture to annual beds.

How to grow hippeastrum in a garden

Step 1

Choose a well drained spot in the garden that attracts full sun to part shade and is sheltered from wind.

Step 2

Enrich the soil with some compost and Yates Dynamic Lifter Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser before planting.

Step 3

Plant bulb with the point facing upwards keeping the neck of the bulb at the soil surface.

Step 4

Space 30cm apart. Water sparingly.

Step 5

Once shoots start to appear, feed every 2-3 weeks with Yates Thrive Roses & Flowers Liquid Plant Food which will bolster the bulbs nutrient supplies for a great flower display.

How to grow hippeastrum in a pot

Step 1

Choose a pot that has adequate drainage holes and place it in a position that gets full sun to part shade and is sheltered from wind.

Step 2

Fill the pot with Yates Potting Mix with Dynamic Lifter.

Step 3

Plant bulb with the point facing upwards keeping the neck of the bulb at the soil surface. Water sparingly.

Step 4

Once shoots start to appear, feed every 2-3 weeks with Yates Thrive Roses & Flowers Liquid Plant Food, which will bolster the bulbs nutrient supplies for a great flower display.

Hippeastrum Growing Tips

Hippeastrums can remain in the soil season after season. Overtime plants can become overcrowded. Bulbs can be divided and offsets can be taken in early winter.
Once flowering has finished, cut the flower off at the base of the plant.
Due to the delicate nature of the flowers, avoid planting in areas with strong winds.
Some Hippeastrum varieties are perennials that never die down. If you intend on moving these varieties, do not remove the foliage. Simply dig the plants up in spring and move to intended position.
