How to Grow Jonquils

Jonquils are a bright and cheerful delight to see appearing in the garden from late winter to early spring! A close relative of the daffodil, jonquils provide a lovely bunch of smaller trumpet like flowers that come in a range of yellow and cream to white shades. Great for planting in rockeries, garden beds or pots and for use as a cut flower.

How to grow jonquils in a garden

Step 1

Choose a well drained spot in the garden that attracts full sun to part shade.

Step 2

Enrich the soil with some compost and Yates Dynamic Lifter Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser before planting.

Step 3

Place bulbs directly where the plant is to grow at a depth of 10cm and 10cm apart.

Step 4

Cover with soil and lightly water in.

Step 5

Avoid watering the bulbs until the first shoots appear. Once the shoots appear, water sparingly to keep the soil lightly moist.

Step 6

When flower buds appear feed with Yates Thrive Natural Roses and Flowers Liquid Plant Food every 1 to 2 weeks.

Step 7

After the flowers and foliage die back, lift the bulbs from the soil and store them in a cool dry place ready for the next season. Alternatively, bulbs can remain in well-drained soil for the next flowering season.

How to grow jonquils in a pot

Step 1

Choose a pot that has adequate drainage holes and place it in a position that gets full sun to part shade.

Step 2

Fill the pot with Yates Potting Mix with Dynamic Lifter.

Step 3

Place bulbs directly into the pot at a depth of 10cm. Bulbs in pots can be placed closer together but still allow at least 5cm between each planting.

Step 4

Cover with soil and lightly water in.

Step 5

Avoid watering the bulbs until the first shoots appear. Once the shoots appear, water sparingly to keep the soil lightly moist.

Step 6

When flower buds appear feed every 1 to 2 weeks with Yates Thrive Natural Roses and Flowers Liquid Plant Food.

Step 7

After the flowers and foliage die, lift the bulbs from the soil and store them in a cool dry place ready for the next season.

Growing tips

Ensure that the soil is well fertilised prior to planting.
If your bulb fails to flower, it may be a result of overcrowding or warm winter temperatures.
Jonquils dislike very wet conditions. Avoid planting in waterlogged areas as rotting can occur.
Jonquils are hungry plants. Ensure that you regularly feed the plant, applying a good amount of Yates Thrive Natural Roses and Flowers Liquid Plant Food every 1 to 2 weeks.
Allow the plants to die right back before removing the bulbs or cutting back any foliage. This should give you stronger growth in the following season.
