How to Grow Mandevilla

Mandevillas or Dipladenias are very popular easy-care flowering climbers! They are loved for their long lasting flowers and flowering period with their deep red, pink, white and yellow flowers. Their easy-care nature and drought hardiness make them perfect for container gardens and pots.

How to grow mandevilla in a garden

Step 1

Choose a well drained spot in the garden in full sun to part shade.

Step 2

Enrich the soil in the planting bed with some compost and Yates Dynamic Lifter Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser before planting.

Step 3

Dig the planting hole twice as wide and to the same depth as the root-ball. Remove the plant from the container, gently tease the roots.

Step 4

Position in hole and backfill with soil, gently firming down. Form a raised or doughnut shaped ring of soil around the outer edge of the plant's root zone. This helps keep water where it's needed. Always water in well after planting to settle the soil around the roots and keep the soil moist for several weeks while the new plant establishes.

Step 5

Mulch around the base with organic mulch like bark chips, sugarcane or pea straw, keeping it away from the base of the plant.

Step 6

During the flowering period, feed every 1 to 2 weeks with Yates Thrive Natural Roses and Flowers Liquid Plant Food. Feed in autumn and spring with Yates Dynamic Lifter Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser to ensure strong root development.

How to grow mandevilla in a pot

Step 1

Choose a pot at least 600mm wide. Position in full sun to part shade and fill with quality potting mix, such as Yates Potting Mix with Dynamic Lifter.

Step 2

Remove the plant from the container, gently tease the roots.

Step 3

Position in hole and backfill with soil, gently firming down. Water in well.

Step 4

Growing tips

Mandevillas don't like getting wet feet so avoid overwatering.
Ensure that you provide the plant with plenty of sturdy support to grow on.
Some mandevillas are often also referred to as diplandenias. These plants are considered to be forms of M. sanderii.
For the cooler climates try growing M. laxa. This deciduous variety produces fragrant summer flowers and can tolerate frosts down to -6°C. If it is damaged by the cold, cut back completely and it will re-shoot from the base.
Wear gloves when pruning to protect your skin from the milky sap.

Why are the leaves on my Mandevilla (Dipladenia) falling off the plant?

Sometimes, cooler weather can have an impact on Mandevillas. If it is too cold or if water/rainfall is irregular, yellow leaves may appear. To address this issue, you should examine the pots to determine if the potting mix retains water and assess the moisture level of the soil.

Mites may also cause the leaves to yellow. Mites are microscopic and are not easily seen unless you have a magnifying glass or hand lens. In cases of severe infestation, slight webbing can be seen between stems or leaves. If you suspect you have mites spray with Yates Nature's Way Vegie & Herb Spray. Fertilise the Mandevilla now and again later in the season.
