How to Grow Nasturtium

If you are looking for an annual plant that provides your garden with colour and some protection from insects, you can't go past Nasturtiums. Their bright and happy flowers and delicious scent not only brighten up your garden, but can also be used in your kitchen as both the leaves and flowers are edible. This is a real champion plant and a must have for any vegetable garden!

How to grow nasturtium in a garden

Step 1

Choose a spot in the garden that receives full sun and prepare the planting area well by digging in Yates Dynamic Lifter Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser.

Step 2

Sow the seeds directly where they are to grow and completely cover with Yates Seed Raising Mix to a depth of 12 mm as they require darkness to germinate.

Step 3

Firm down and water gently and keep moist through germination period.

Step 4

Once the plants have reached about 5 cm in height, lightly mulch with an organic mulch, such as bark chips, sugar cane or pea straw.

Step 5

Feed every 1 to 2 weeks with Yates Thrive Roses and Flowers Liquid Plant Food.

How to grow nasturtium in a pot

Step 1

Choose a pot at least 200 mm wide and deep. Position in full sun.

Step 2

Fill the chosen pots with quality potting mix, such as Yates Potting Mix with Dynamic Lifter.

Step 3

Plant directly into the pot and completely cover with Yates Seed Raising Mix to a depth of 12 mm as they require darkness to germinate.

Step 4

Firm down and water gently and keep moist through germination period.

Step 5

Feed every 1 to 2 weeks with Yates Thrive Roses and Flowers Liquid Plant Food.

Growing tips

Nasturtiums are the ultimate 'decoy' plant which makes them great for your vegetable patch. They are more attractive to insects such as aphids, mites, caterpillars and white fly which means that they
will be attacked first leaving you a chance to control these pests before they reach your vegetables.
Remove spent blooms to promote flowering.
Leaves and flowers can be consumed and are a lovely addition to salads.
Very attractive to bees.
