How to Grow Oregano

With its robust, earthy and aromatic flavour, oregano is a grab-and-go herb that pairs well with chicken, scrambled eggs, baked eggplant, burgers and even fish. Your cooking will never be the same and nor will your garden! Grow it in a warm spot outside or keep it in a pot on a sunny balcony.

How to grow oregano in a garden

Step 1

Choose a sunny spot in the garden that is protected from the hot afternoon sun. Prepare the planting area well by digging in Yates Dynamic Lifter Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser.

Step 2

Sow seeds direct into the prepared bed and cover with fine soil or Yates Seed Raising Mix. Water in well.

Step 3

Once seedlings emerge, thin to 50cm apart and feed weekly with Yates Thrive Vegie & Herb Liquid Plant Food. Mulch around base of plants with organic mulch like sugar cane or pea straw to retain moisture.

Step 4

Harvest leaves and stems as desired, removing flower heads to help extend the harvest window.

How to grow oregano in a pot

Step 1

Choose a pot at least 300mm wide and deep. Position in a warm, sunny spot that's protected from the hot afternoon sun. Fill with quality potting mix such as Yates Potting Mix with Dynamic Lifter.

Step 2

Fill starter trays with Yates Seed Raising Mix. Sprinkle seeds over mix, lightly cover and gently water. Keep the soil moist throughout germination.

Step 3

Once seedlings reach 10cm tall fill chosen pots with quality potting mix, such as Yates Potting Mix with Dynamic Lifter. Transplant seedling into the pot and water in well with Yates Thrive Vegie & Herb Liquid Plant Food.
