How to Grow Pilea

Pilea, sometimes called the Chinese money plant, creates an indoor statement by developing an upright tree-like stem covered in round pancake like leaves. They look great when grouped together with plants with contrasting and colourful foliage.

How to grow pilea in a pot

Step 1

Choose a warm spot indoors that is well lit but away from direct sunlight or draughts.

Step 2

Fill the pot with Yates Premium Potting Mix, specially formulated to suit indoor and outdoor plants.

Step 3

Remove the plant from the container, gently tease the roots and cut away any matted or tangled roots.

Step 4

Position in a hole and backfill with potting mix, gently firming down. Water in well keeping the water away from the leaves.

Step 5

After the initial watering, keep the potting mix slightly moist. Watering can be reduced during winter.

Growing tips

If artificial heating or air conditioning is used, mist the foliage daily to increase humidity levels around the plant.
Dead leaves should be removed regularly and leaf tips pinched every so often to encourage a bushy plant.
Rotate plants by 90-180 degrees every few weeks to encourage symmetrical growth.
