Ananas comosus
How to Grow Pineapple
Contrary to popular belief, Pineapples don't grow on trees – they actually grow from a handsome leafy plant on the ground. Pineapples belong to the Bromeliad family (same as the trendy Air Plant!) and are one of the few Bromeliads you can eat. Despite their tropical appearance, they don't need a tropical climate to thrive – they're quite happy with subtropical to warm temperate, frost-free areas. These plants can grow 1.5 m tall and 1 m wide, so make sure you have the space if you're going to grow a few.
