How to Grow Shallots

Shallots are grown from small bulbs, the mild onion flavour is a great add-on for salad, stir fries, baking or just for garnish to give that lovely green colour. Best of all, this herb is drought tolerant, space saving and easy to grow.

How to grow shallots in a garden

Step 1

Choose a sunny or part shade spot in your garden with well-drained soil. Enrich with Yates Dynamic Lifter Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser.

Step 2

Plant the mother bulbs direct, planting them in 5 - 7 cm deep and water well.

Step 3

Do not water until seedlings emerge, then feed seedlings weekly with Yates Thrive Vegie and Herb Liquid Plant Food.

Step 4

Harvest by cutting the green leaves above the white stem – this will also help encourage leafier growth. Replant successive crops every 3 - 4 weeks to extend you harvest window.

How to grow shallots in a pot

Step 1

Choose a pot at least 300 mm wide and deep and position in a sunny or part shade. Fill with quality potting mix, such as Yates Potting Mix with Dynamic Lifter.

Step 2

Plant the mother bulbs direct in 5 – 7 cm deep in 15 – 25 cm space

Step 3

Do not water until seedlings emerge, feed weekly with Yates Thrive Vegie and Herb Liquid Plant Food.

Step 4

Harvest by cutting the green leaves above the white stem – this will also help encourage leafier growth. Replant successive crops every 3 - 4 weeks to extend you harvest window.
