How to Grow Thyme

If you haven't got any 'thyme' for anything, then grow some! This herb makes an attractive ground cover and is also perfect for flavouring stock, stuffing and sauces. Give it full sun, well drained soil and once it's established, thyme won't need much attention at all.

How to grow thyme in a garden

Step 1

Choose a sunny spot with well drained soil. Enrich the soil with Yates Dynamic Lifter Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser.

Step 2

Sow seeds direct and cover with Yates Seed Raising Mix. Firm down and water well.

Step 3

As seedlings grow, thin out to 25cm apart and feed weekly with Yates Thrive Vegie & Herb Liquid Plant Food.

Step 4

Mulch around the base of the plant with organic mulch like sugar cane or pea straw to retain moisture.

Step 5

Pick leaves regularly to encourage more growth.

How to grow thyme in a pot

Step 1

Choose a pot at least 300mm wide and deep. Position in full sun and fill with quality potting mix, such as Yates Potting Mix with Dynamic Lifter.

Step 2

Sow seeds and lightly cover with Yates Seed Raising Mix. Water in well.

Step 3

As seedlings grow, thin out to 25cm apart and feed weekly with Yates Thrive Vegie & Herb Liquid Plant Food.

Step 4

Pick leaves regularly to encourage more growth.

Growing tips

Leaves can be dried or sprigs wrapped in baking paper and plastic, and then frozen for later use.
After a couple of years, if your plant is looking a little tired and leggy, give them a hard prune and this will help rejuvenate them.
