Fertilise

Time to fertilise lawns with Yates Dynamic Lifter Concentrated Lawn Food. The rich organic matter will help improve the soil and the added nutrients give a quick green up. Rainy weather is ideal for fertilising lawns.

Weed control

Control broadleaf weeds in lawns, like dandelion, capeweed and thistles, in kikuyu and couch lawns with Yates Weed'n'Feed and with Yates BuffaloPro in buffalo lawns. Control them now before they have a chance to set seed.

Insect control

Apply Yates Baythroid Advanced Insect Killer for Lawns to control adult African Black Beetle. The larvae of this beetle, curl grub, chew through grass roots, creating dead and dying patches and lawn that can be rolled back like a carpet.

Waterwise

Soil underneath lawns can become water repellent, particularly when the weather has been dry. This means that moisture can’t effectively reach the lawn’s roots. Treat the soil with an easy hose-on application of Yates Waterwise Soil Wetter to help break down the waxy, water repellent soil layer and make the moist of any rainfall or watering.

Here are the 5 simple spring lawn care steps you can do to take your lawn from drab to fab!

  1. Repair the bare patches - bare spots in lawns can be as a result of many different factors, including lawn insect pests, diseases, drought and wear and tear from kids and pets. Weeds are opportunistic and will quickly invade bare patches in the lawn if you don’t repair them. Early spring is a great time for lawn repair as new grass seedlings will be able to establish before the hot weather arrives. To prepare the bare patch for repair, remove any dead grass and gently cultivate and loosen the soil. Mix some Munns Arid Sun and Shade Lawn Seed Mix with Munns Superstart Seed & Turf Starter Fertiliser, which contains a special combination of gentle nutrients and organic matter to promote easier sowing, even seed distribution and faster germination and strong grass seedling growth. Water the patch regularly while the new grass establishes.

  2. Feeding - it takes a lot of energy for lawns to grow the thick, deep green growth that is beautiful to walk and play on and help create a fantastic looking front and back yard.  We also mow lawns constantly throughout the warmer seasons, which removes lots of nutrients from the soil. Regular feeding with an organic based lawn food like Yates® Dynamic Lifter® Concentrated Lawn Food not only helps improve the organic matter content of the soil but is also a source of concentrated fast acting nutrients, specially designed to encourage rapid greening of all types of lawns, including buffalo.

  3. Grub prevention - curl grubs are a common and destructive lawn insect pest during spring. Adult African black beetles mate and lay eggs during early spring, which hatch into curl grubs that chew through lawn roots and cause dying and dead patches throughout the lawn.  Baythroid Advanced Insect Killer for Lawns is a broad spectrum insecticide for control of a wide range of lawn insect pests, including adult African black beetle. Applying Baythroid Advanced Insect Killer for Lawns during early spring will help control the adult African black beetles before they’ve had a chance to lay eggs, which turn into curl grubs.

  4. Weed control - the last of cool season broadleaf weeds like clover can be controlled during early spring and other weeds like bindii, dandelions and thistles also need to be controlled before they have a chance to flower, set seed and spread. If you have a couch or kikuyu lawn, apply easy to use hose-on Yates Weed’n’Feed® to control common broadleaf weeds. If you have a buffalo lawn, it’s important to choose weed killers that are safe for buffalo. Yates Buffalo PRO® Weed’n’Feed has been specially designed for buffalo lawns. Both Yates Weed’n’Feed and Yates Buffalo PRO® Weed’n’Feed will also give the lawn a quick burst of nutrients to promote healthy green growth.

  5. Fix water repellent soil – dry conditions can exacerbate water repellency of soil underneath lawns, leading to ineffecient watering and poor lawn health. Apply Yates Waterwise® Soil Wetter over the lawn, to help reduce the water repellency and get moisture down into the lawn root zone where it’s needed.
