How to Grow Amaryllis

These beautiful flowers are also known as 'Naked Ladies'. Their large, fragrant, trumpet shaped flowers are pink but also a creamy white with strappy leaves and provide a lovely scent to the garden. They are very hardy and easy to grow from bulbs, often forgotten in garden beds until their welcome appearance in Summer.

How to grow amaryllis in a garden

Step 1

Choose a well drained spot in the garden that attracts full sun and is sheltered from wind.

Step 2

Enrich the soil with some compost and Yates Dynamic Lifter Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser before planting.

Step 3

Plant bulb with the point facing upwards with the neck of the bulb protruding through the soil.

Step 4

Space 30 cm apart. Water sparingly.

Step 5

Once shoots start to appear, feed every 2-3 weeks with Yates Thrive Roses & Flowers Liquid Plant Food which will bolster the bulbs' nutrient supplies for a great flower display.

How to grow amaryllis in a pot

Step 1

Choose a pot that has adequate drainage holes and place it in a position that gets full sun and is sheltered from wind.

Step 2

Fill the pot with Yates Potting Mix with Dynamic Lifter.

Step 3

Plant bulbs with the point facing upwards with the neck of the bulb protruding through the soil. Water sparingly.

Step 4

Place the container in a sunny spot.

Step 5

Once shoots start to appear, feed every 2-3 weeks with Yates Thrive Roses & Flowers Liquid Plant Food, which will bolster the bulbs nutrient supplies for a great flower display.

Growing tips

Before planting, place the roots of the bulb in lukewarm water for a few hours.
When the plant stops flowering, cut the stem to the top of the bulb, it will flower again.
