How to Grow Potatoes
Looking to grow your own Potatoes? They're a fantastic kitchen staple, they store for months and they're easy and fun to grow – a great way to get kids involved in gardening! You can grow Potatoes in the ground, in raised garden beds, pots or special Potato bags. There are lots of different varieties of Potatoes that come in various shapes, sizes and colours. Home gardeners have the advantage of being able to grow interesting varieties that aren't available in supermarkets. Starting with certified seed Potatoes, it takes 3-4 months for Potatoes to be ready to harvest.
Climate Zone, When and Where to Grow
Climate zone: Potatoes can be grown in all areas around Australia.
When to grow:Â Potatoes are commonly planted in late winter and spring and grow during spring and summer. In warm climates potatoes can also be planted in autumn. In cold climates, plant seed potatoes a few weeks before the last expected frost.
Where to grow:Â Grow potatoes in a sunny spot that receives at least six hours of sunshine a day, in a well-drained garden bed or pot.
Harvesting
Growing time:Â Depending on the climate and variety, potatoes will be ready to harvest anywhere from three to five months after planting.
When to harvest :Â Plants starting to flower or foliage beginning to yellow and die back are signs that the potatoes should be ready to harvest. To check, gently feel under the soil with your hands and gauge how big the potatoes are. If they're still small, they can be left for a few more weeks.
How to harvest :Â Using a spade or fork, gently dig around the outside of the plant to loosen the soil and then holding the stem pull the plant up.
